The Aragon Flag Pole from the old mill will stand proudly soon with its original copper ball, which took damage of all kinds.

One more piece of the Aragon Mill flag pole is now ready to be put back up when the time comes as the city moves closer to completing work on the project.

City clerk Sandy Norman reported that some delays have forced back when the city had hoped in November to hold a ceremony bringing the flag pole back by placing it in front of the Brenda Gazaway Municipal Complex before the beginning of the year.

She said a ceremony will likely be held sometime at the end of November or beginning of December for the flag pole after it is finally stood back up in front of city hall with the comple-tion of a restoration project.

Workers are trying to figure out exactly where the flag pole should go, and how best to seat the pole into the ground since the

current flag pole was put into place by simply cutting the old one off at the base, and then cementing around the bottom to keep it all together.

Norman said this was likely to be one of the main reasons for the delay, other than the slow painstaking work of completing the restoration project on the pole itself.

"It's still ongoing," she said.

One of those projects is already done and waiting for the pole at city hall: the copper ball which sits atop the pole.

It required a bit of work itself, Norman said, after years atop the flag pole under all conditions of weather and having taken several gunshot wounds.

The work, being completed voluntarily with the help of local businessman Andrew Heaner, who agreed to help with it when he realized he had the flag pole in his possession.

Danny Forsyth, the city’s building inspector who spearheaded the project, also gave an update during the Oct. 20 council meeting.
