Cedartown area girl dies in Atlanta hospital

A 21-month old child was pronounced dead over the weekend at Egleston in Atlanta, and police are still investigat­ing the circumstan­ces according to Polk County Deputy Coroner Marty Robinson.

Robinson said Monday morning before press time that Ella Grace Pointer of an Adamson Drive address south of Cedartown was rushed to the hospital after 911 received a call of a child not breathing around 1:31 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

After she was stabilized at Polk Medical Center, she was airlifted to Egleston hospital in Atlanta, where she remained in the neonatal intensive care unit until Sunday afternoon, Oct. 30, when she died at 4:46 p.m.

Robinson was unable to release any details about how the girl was injured over the weekend. He said that Polk County Police investigat­ors are being joined by the Georgia Bureau of Investigat­ion’s Medical Examiner and the Polk County coroner’s office.

Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier said that at this point in time, “we’re asking for all involved to control their temperment and let law enforcemen­t

work to get the answers that we need, and let cooler heads prevail.”

He said threats of violence have already been made, and “at this point in time more than anything else we need to let the law enforcemen­t community do their job. We direct our thoughts and prayers to this devastated family.”

A release from the Polk County Police Department said that they are “currently awaiting the results of the autopsy report from the G.B.I. crime lab as well as hospital records before an official cause of death can be made. There were two men with the baby at the time of the incident who have been interviewe­d.”

They took one of the men with the child at the time of the incident has been arrested for violation of his current probation conditions. He is identified as Dustin D. Putnal age 27.
