The regular basketball season is close to the end in Polk.

- From staff reports

Only one more regular season game is in store for the Cedartown Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs as they face off against Chapel Hill on the road one more time before the region tournament is set to start.

The Feb. 6 region tournament will decide whether Cedartown’s basketball teams will be heading to the state tournament this year as both are finishing off the season looking at losing records and low ranking in the region.

The Cedartown Lady Bulldogs stand at 6-14 (2-8 Region 5-AAAA) on the season after losses before the weekend and the Standard Journal press time on a road trip to Troup County 51-47 non Jan. 28.

The Bulldogs ( 9- 11, 3- 7 Region 5-AAAA) also lost their game against the Tigers on the road as well, 41-35.

This came on the heels of a close win for the boys against Central Carroll at home on Jan. 24 in a 76-75 victory, while the girls weren’t able to hold on and lost to the Lady Lions 46-40.

After the Standard Journal press time on Tuesday, Cedartown was facing a game against Sandy Creek, which will help determine region standings before the tournament is set to start on Monday, Feb. 6 and continue on through Feb. 10.

Cedartown’s boys are heading into the tournament in the fifth place spot as of the weekend before results against Sandy Creek and Chapel Hill could be counted, falling behind LaGrange, Cartersville, Sandy Creek and Troup County for the Bulldogs’ placement in the region. A loss against Sandy Creek wouldn’t immediately effect their placement, but a loss to Chapel Hill would push the boys back to at least a sixth place spot.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs are last in the region behind all other schools, with Chapel Hill, Sandy Creek, Troup County and LaGrange taking up the top four spots in the region this year.

If the Lady Bulldogs can come back and win the region tournament, they would be guaranteed a spot in the state tournament and improve their record to nearly even.

Cedartown needs to only pick up a few crucial wins during the coming region tournament to secure their spot in the state tournament, needing to overcome at least Troup County to make it into the games.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will play on Friday night on the road for their last regular season game.
