Cedartown Middle School hosts the FCAA championships last week
The season is over for Cedartown’s middle school teams, with one coming away the tournament winner for the Floyd County Athletic Association, and the other the runner up.
Cedartown’s boys middle school team ended their season against the Model Blue Devils during the Feb. 6 tournament at Cedartown Middle School in an exciting finish, capturing the title in a 33-28 win.
The Bulldogs and Blue Devils had kept it even up until the final minutes of the game, going into halftime sitting at 15-all at halftime and at 21-all up to five minutes left in the game before the Bulldogs began to break away.
Cedartown overcame Chatt- ooga and Darlington to get into the title game against Model in the FCAA tournament, while Rockmart had played into the semifinal round against the Blue Devils after a win over Coosa as the third seed team in the first round on Feb. 2.
The Lady Bulldogs for the middle school also competed in the championship game on Monday against the now five- time champion Lady Blue Devils in a 44-24 loss.
“These eighth graders have worked to get to this point. They’ve not lost a game in their middle school career,” Model head coach Kayla Evans said. “They wanted it, they knew what it took to get it, and they went out there and got it.
“I can’t say enough about the girls and how hard they worked.”
Model, who defeated an 8th place Chattooga in the opening round and Armuchee in the second round on Saturday were headed up in the scoring book by Kara Dunn, who put 23 points on the board nearly outscored the entire Cedartown team.
“Kayla Dunn, well she’s a heck of a player, and she works hard,” Evans said. “She does all those fundamental things that get you here.”
Dunn was followed in points by Montana Moats, who put up 17 points in the championship game. Lizzie Ogle and Madison Moats had two points a piece in the game rounding out the entire scoring for the Lady Blue Devils.
Cedartown got into the championship game following a win over Darlington in the opening round and a win over ri- val Rockmart before coming up short in the final round, taking the runners up tournament in the Feb. 6 game.
