Local students help celebrate trees with Arbor Day.

- From staff reports

This past week marked a special celebration in Cedartown with local youth and the Cedartown Tree Commission showing some love for trees all across the world.

On Friday, Feb. 17, the Cedartown Tree Commission took Smokey the Bear with them to Westside Elementary School for Arbor Day celebrations, along with planting on the school’s campus of a new native Red Bud tree.

The city’s annual proclamation in celebration of Arbor Day was also read by City Commissioner Dale Tuck.

The Tree Commission has kept busy with successful projects over the past year, thanks to support from the City of Cedartown, the Ayers-Beck Foundation and the W.D. Trippe Foundation and the residents of Cedartown. According to tree commission members, numerous shade and decorative trees have been planted during this year on the Boys and Girls Club grounds on Queen Street, at Turner Street Park and at Peek Forest Park.

All of the have been planted for the use and enjoyment by the citizens of Cedartown, but sometimes fall victim to vandalism or misuse. Officials ask local residents to take time to appreciate recent planting efforts, but to leave the trees alone to grow as nature intended.

If any citizen is witness to willful abuse of local greenery or signage, please contact t he Cedartown Police Department with information immediately.
