The Rockmart Yellow Jackets were hoping for a promising opening to their season, but things didn’t work out that way as they have ended the first week of play at 1-2 before starting up again with a trip to Rome today.

The Jackets opened the season hosting Cass and fell in the homestand 2-1 to the Cass Colonels on Feb. 14.

Kole Holder and Griffin Pace pitched in the loss for the start of the season just ahead of Thursday’s Cedartown game, giving up runs to Cass’s Bailey Campbell and Cody Johnson in the fourth and sixth innings. They gave up five hits between the two of them on the game.

“I thought we played pretty well. We had one error, a couple base running mistakes, and a lot of young guys out there. Just some mental mistakes are keeping us from the win,” head coach Kenny Yanzetich said after Tuesday’s loss. “I though cole holder pitched a heck of a ball game, and griffin pace did a great job in relief.”

Rockmart grabbed a one run lead in the second and held on for two innings before playing into the tie, and giving up the run late in the game to Cass.

After a 12-0 loss in four innings to Cedartown on the road (see this week’s front page story,) Rockmart finally picked up their first win at home.

The Jackets got an 11-0 win over visiting Tattnall County with a big game for Holder who had four hits on the day, and Johnathan Suppes who put up four innings of work on the mound and earning the win.

Rockmart is on the road all this week in non-region play against Rome this afternoon, and then in a double header on Saturday in tournament play against Cass and Hiram.

Cedartown and Rockmart face off again on Feb. 27 for their final game of the season against one another before region play gets underway.
