Football is back in Polk County as scrimmages bring success for teams

- By TYLER WILLIAMS SJ Correspondent

Rockmart fans are ready for football season to return, and they got a brief taste of what is to come for the Jackets as they hosted Bowdon at the Rock last week.

The game might not have counted, but Rockmart's pre-season victory in their first of two scrimmages over the Red Devils ended with a 40-7 victory.

However, it took the Jackets time to kick their game plan into gear, with the second half showing a much improved Rockmart team on the field following some first half mistakes.

Rockmart head coach Biff Parson had a talk with his players af-

ter Friday night's game, and they were told to expect when they came to practice on Monday morning that they be ready for improvements due his dissatisfaction of their efforts on on their home field as the season kicked off, though not officially.

“The scoreboard doesn't really dictate our effort in the first half: it was really poor, and that falls on me as a head coach,” said Parson. “So next week we have a lot of work ahead of us before the scrimmage at Darlington. That crowd over there has a good ball club and if we show up there like we did against Bowdon, we are going to get our butts beat.”

Parson did give a positive appraisal of some Rockmart's talent to hit the field this year. He pointed to the efforts of Javin Whately to spur big plays and get the Jackets back into the game in the season half, and Russell Head was also a big contributor on both sides of the ball.

Overall though, he was not happy with his teams performance.

“I don't feel like we started the season off like we should have we have a lot of bugs that we need to work out involvi ng s ome t echnique stuff,” said Head. “But if we fix that I feel like we will be doing alright.”

This year's starting quarterback Dylan Bailey said he had mixed emotions on the victory.

“We looked good, but we have a lot to work on in practice.” said Bailey. “Now we just have to focus on the next game at Darlington, do it right, then make it big at the Cedartown game.”

Despite t he minor flukes on the field this game has showed a promising season to come for the Jackets.

The next few days will tell if Parsons will get his team to correct minor errors and make Rockmart an unstoppable swarm of Jackets through the rest of the season.
