Man killed in single vehicle wreck

A Cedartown man who was loved in the community was killed in a morning wreck last week on Cave Spring Road, according Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier.

Brazier said Samuel Hughes, 60, of a Cedartown address, was pronounced dead at 10:59 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, following lifesaving efforts in the Polk Medical Center emergency room.

Since January of this year, the Polk County Drug Task Force has been responsibl­e for making 65 arrests and conducting a total of 132 surveillan­ce operations.

In addition, nine weapons have been seized along with $11,590 worth of currency as a direct result of drug task force operations, according to Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome, who also serves as the public informatio­n officer for the task force.

Comprised of seven law enforcemen­t officers, Newsome said members of the drug task force are trained rigorously in order to protect the citizens of the county and its respective municipali­ties. “These officers have had intensive training in areas of search and seizure, search warrants, surveillan­ce operations, interviews and interrogat­ions and highway drug interdicti­on.”

So far this year, the drug task force has been asked to assist local law agencies a total of 48 driver's seat. Brazier said Hughes was unrestrain­ed from a seatbelt at the time.

Redmond Emergency Medical Services and Cedartown Fire Department offciails arrived not long after the initial call to 911 came in about the wreck at 9:53 a.m., and began livesaving measures on scene and transporte­d him to Polk Medical Center.

Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigat­ion into the wreck, which only involved the one vehicle and Hughes according to Brazier.

Hughes was a wellloved and remembered member of the community, Brazier said.

"He was the nicest guy, the type you enjoyed knowing," Brazier said. times. “Let’s say a patrolman from the Cedartown Police Department pulls over a motorist and some sort of drug infraction is suspected. That officer can request an agency assist, and the drug task force will respond to that officer’s call for assistance. That is a great example of teamwork,” Newsome said.

The drug task force has been active since 2013. Just last month alone, six arrests were made at several locations across the county by the task force.
