Batle of the Borders coming up on Friday in Cedartown

- From staff reports

Head coach Doyle Kelley is hoping to have as good a night has he did this past Friday when the Piedmont and Cherokee County, Alabama high schools come to call in Polk County at the end of this week for a doubleheader on the gridrion featuring Rockmart and Piedmont in Game 1, and Cedartown and Cherokee County in Game 2.

Kickoff i s set f or 5: 30 p. m. at Cedartown Memorial Stadium, where this year the Georgia teams get to host the second annual battle. The teams signed a four-year agreement to play each other, with each team getting to host an annual game.

Head coach Doyle Kelley said he expected the stands to once again be completely packed for the second home game of the season for Cedartown, and for Rockmart’s game as well.

However, both he and Rockmart head coach Biff Parson will have to figure out a game plan for how they plan to handle Piedmont and Cherokee County, since both teams open their season on the road in Cedartown on Friday night.

Parson said that he would be calling the game one play at a time during the upcoming showdown.

It’ll be a tough test for both the Jackets and Bulldogs after an opening round with both teams provided a win and a loss for Georgia in the new friendly rivalry.

Last year, Rockmart and Cedartown traveled to Piedmont, Ala., to play in the first ever Battle of the Borders as the opener of the season for both teams. Rockmart won their game against Cherokee County in a 54-28 offensive match between the two teams in the rain, while Cedartown fell to Piedmont in a 29-22 loss on the road.

Expect the game to be crowded for this year’s edition, and to have trouble finding parking between the first and second games when Piedmont fans will have a chance to leave if they wish go. Admission will cover both games for those who plan to attend the opener between Rockmart and Piedmont, with the Bulldogs and Cherokee County Warriors set to play in the closing game of the night.

The Bulldogs come into the game with their opening season rivalry victory under their belts (see the story below for more on the game,) while Rockmart grabbed two scrimmage victories and lost last week to Cedartown.
