Aragon seeking funds for Summer Feeding Program

- From staff reports

The City of Aragon is helping to organize a yard sale coming up at the end of the month to provide funds for the 2018 Summer Feeding Program for local youth. Donations are being accepted through the end of September for the upcoming yard sale, with all proceeds to go toward the program that provides meals for Aragon youth during the summer months at the Aragon Community Center.

Council member Debbie Pittman, who this past summer was only able to feed youth daily through half of the summer months, said that it is her hope with fundraisers like this and others upcoming she’ll be able to provide meals throughout the summer.

“We really want to be able to do more with this program, because the children of Aragon really enjoyed the meals,” she said.

The yard sale, scheduled for Sept. 30 from 8 a. m. to noon at Aragon City Hall.

City Clerk Christie Langston said donations for the sale are being taken up now, with anything and everything being taken in as long as it has some value.

“We’ll take clothes, household furnishings, appliances, just about anything that we can sell,” she said.

Smaller donations can be dropped off at City Hall, located at 2814 Rome Highway, Aragon, and those interested in making larger donations like furniture or appliances, or other items that might prove difficult to store, should contact Langston at 770-684-6563 extension 160, or email her at christie.langston@cityofaragon.com

Pittman said that she hopes the yard sale will be the first of many fundraisers for the Summer Feed program.

In October when the city holds a Pumpkin patch event, she said that money from concession sales will go toward the program as well. Funds collected via the upcoming events will go toward the purchase of food for local youth that Pittman prepares on weekdays during the summer months and serves at the Aragon Community Center. Pittman was able to provide meals through July and early August this year, cooking something each day and serving the meal before she went to work herself on the night shift as a nurse.
