Essay, art contests for students are coming up for Farm Bureau
The Polk County Farm Bureau encourages sixth, seventh and eighth grade students to enter the 2018 Georgia Farm Bureau Middle School Essay Contest, open not only to public school students, but those who are in private school and home school as well.
Recognizing that many schools have gardens, the topic for the essay contest students will discuss is “What are the benefits of school gardens?”
The essay should explore how school gardens t each students about the fruits and vegetables Georgia farmers grow. Students may write about their own experience with a school garden, how they would like to expand their school’s garden or why they hope their school starts a garden.
The winner of the Polk County Farm Bureau Essay Contest will receive $50 prize money, secondand third-place winners will receive $ 25 prize money.
“Georgia farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables that can be grown in a school garden such as blueberries, bell peppers, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, lettuce, and tomatoes,” said James Casey, Polk County Farm Bureau president. “The purpose of the Farm Bureau Essay Contest is to encourage students to learn how their food is grown. If a school doesn’t already have a school garden, we hope this contest will inspire the school to start one.”
To enter the contest, students should contact the Polk County Farm Bureau for an entry form and contest rules. All entries must be received at the Polk Farm Bureau office by Feb. 23, 2018, for judges to select a winner and submit it to the GFB office by Friday, March 9, 2018.
Winner will be entered in the Georgia Farm Bureau Third District competition.
The district winner will receive a cash prize of $100. The 10 GFB district winners will compete for the state prize of $150 cash.
Previous state winners are not eligible.
This contest is sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau and coordinated by the Georgia Farm Bureau Women’s Leadership Committee.

All essay entries must be officially submitted by the Polk Farm Bureau to the Georgia Farm Bureau home office.
Meanwhile the Farm Bureau also has something for students in ninth through 12th grade to enter the 2017 Georgia Farm Bureau High School Art Contest.
The artwork should be drawn in black ink or dark soft lead pencil on an 8½ x 11 inch piece of white paper.
The artwork should be camera ready.
The winner of the Polk County Farm Bureau Art Contest will receive $50 prize money, and secondand third-place winners $25.
“Georgia farmers produce a wide variety of crops and livestock including poultry, beef cattle, dairy, cotton, peanuts, pecans, blueberries and many more fruits and vegetables as well as timber,” said James Casey, Polk County Farm Bureau president.
“Agriculture had a total economic impact of $74.3 billion on Georgia’s $907.7 billion economy in 2014 by not only producing raw commodities but also by creating a vari- ety of jobs to harvest, process and transport these crops.
The purpose of t he Farm Bureau Art Contest is to encourage students to increase their knowledge of Georgia agriculture and the contributions it makes to our lives every day.”
Drawings will be judged on 1) how well the artwork represents modern agriculture found in Polk county or Georgia’s agriculture industry and 2) artistic merit.

Students must be willing to allow Georgia Farm Bureau to reprint copies of their drawings. The winning artwork becomes the property of Georgia Farm Bureau and will be printed in a calendar that is distributed by Georgia Farm Bureau to promote agriculture.
Georgia Farm Bureau and SunTrust Bank of Middle Georgia sponsor the contest.
