New housing development is planning on winter 2017 opening
Vinings at Oxford is under construction on the corner of Blanche Road and the Cedartown Bypass.
Officials involved in the construction of the new housing development off of the Cedartown Bypass are anticipating an opening date sometime this winter.
Vinings at Oxford, located on 20 acres inside the City limits, is a new housing development that will feature 62 town homes. These dwellings are comprised of nine one- bedroom units, 32 two-bedroom units and 21 three-bedroom units. In addition to offering affordable, quality housing, Vinings at Oxford will also include a covered picnic area, barbecue grills and an outdoor playground for residents to enjoy.
Cedartown City Commission Chairman Jordan Hubbard said the new development couldn’t have come to Cedartown at a better time. “I was visiting with City Manager Bill Fann in his office several years ago and we were talking about the importance of build- ing up the City’s housing options for current residents and those looking to move here,” Hubbard explained. “Literally five seconds later, an employee from the Vantage group walked into the office wanting to work with the City to bring in this housing development.”
Hubbard said that initial meeting has not only brought new housing options to Cedartown, but also spurred on Cedartown’s involvement with the UGA-sponsored program, Georgia Initiative for Community Housing.
The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing offers communities a three-year program of collaboration and technical assistance related to housing and community development. The objective of the Initiative is to help communities create and launch a locally based plan to meet their housing needs.
The Cedartown GICH team remains focused on providing affordable and desirable low- income housing options, eradicating blight from the community and educating residents on city code and ordinances.
“We have spent right at three years building a plan for housing needs, so this development is great news for Cedartown — and one that will benefit the entire community,” Hubbard said.
Cedartown’s goal with providing income-based, attractive housing is twofold. The City hopes these new housing options will allow residents to move from sub-standard housing and into a safe and healthy environment. Additionally, the City believes that this development — and others in the future — will provide a trickle- down effect on slumlords. “We feel that once residents discover that safe and attractive housing can be affordable, they will vacate substandard housing, forcing landlords to bring their homes up to code in order to attract and retain new tenants,” Hubbard explained.
The new development is about 65 percent complete, and swift progress is being made every day. Vantage Management has hired a site manager from the area and rented a temporary pre-leasing office in downtown Cedartown.
