Floyd cel­e­brates birthday with Polk com­mis­sion oath

Fam­ily and f riends gath­ered in the Polk County Pro­bate Court­room for a short cer­e­mony to swear in Hal Floyd and al­low him to start his new job as County Com­mis­sioner on Mon­day af­ter press time.

Floyd had much of his fam­ily on hand for the swear­ing in cer­e­mony, which also some­what of a birthday present as he also cel­e­brates his 75th birthday on Fri­day, Nov. 3.

“Now it is time to get to work,” Floyd said af­ter he took the oath from Pro­bate Judge Linda Smith.

His swear­ing in wraps up sev­eral months of the county com­mis­sion with­out a full board af­ter Jason Ward and Ste­fanie Drake Burford both re­signed at the end of July and the end of Au­gust re­spec­tively.

Floyd takes over the Dis­trict 3 seat held by Burford, who was re­elected to of­fice in 2016. He’ll take over the rest of the re­main­ing term in of­fice, and won’t be back up for elec­tion un­til 2020.

The cer­e­mony was held just in time for Floyd to take over the seat for the Novem­ber County Com­mis­sion work ses­sion and meet­ing, be­ing held on this com­ing Mon­day, Nov. 6 at 5:15 p.m. and Tues­day, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.

Floyd’s fam­ily came from across the coun­try to par­tic­i­pate in the swear­ing-in, his sec­ond this year. Floyd was sworn in af­ter be­ing elected to the Dis­trict 6 School Board seat in Jan­uary, and gave up his po­si­tion af­ter nepo­tism rules re­quired him to re­sign, or his daugh­ter in law to not be al­lowed an ad­min­is­tra­tive role in the Polk School Dis­trict as a vice prin­ci­pal.

Pre­vi­ously, Floyd said that his main goals will be to look at is­sues that have this year pro­vided de­bate over their so­lu­tion, es­pe­cially in­volv­ing the Polk County Land­fill and the Polk County Fire Depart­ment.

Ward’s Dis­trict 1 seat is now filled by Jose In­gle­sias, who was se­lected for the job in Septem­ber and was sworn in be­fore his first meet­ing in Oc­to­ber.
