ROME — The temperatures have cooled, and the leaves on the trees are changing colors, providing a great backdrop for the November edition of Harbin Clinic’s Walk With a Doc.

Radiation oncologist Dr. Matt Mumber encourages his patients to live a healthy, active lifestyle and will practice what he preaches on Saturday, Nov. 18 as he leads the event.

“I’m looking forward to taking advantage of cooler temperatures to get outside and get some exercise,” Dr. Mumber says. “I encourage everyone to come out and participate and experience the healthy benefits of walking.”

The event beings at 9 a.m. at Bridgepoint Plaza in Downtown Rome and follows the Kingfisher Trail. The walk is approximately two miles, but walkers have the option of adding more miles or turning around early. People of all fitness level are welcome and encouraged to participate.

The free series began in April and since then nearly 300 community members have joined Harbin Clinic physicians on the monthly jaunts.

Dr. Mumber, who swam collegiately at the University of Virginia and remains active to this day, advocates exercise for his patients.

“I’ve seen the difference regular exercise can make in my patients, and I want everyone to realize that even walking just a few times a week can pay big health dividends down the road,” Dr. Mumber says. “The exercise helps relieve stress and has a long list of health benefits.”

Statistics show that active people typically live longer and have a lower risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression and some forms of cancer.

November weather can be unpredictable. Be sure to check the weather forecast before the walk to see if you might need to add an extra layer or bring rain gear. Please also check Harbin Clinic’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages for event updates due to inclement weather.
