YGES counts down the days to Christmas
The excitement at one local school continues to grow as students and faculty are counting down the days left to Christmas with a variety of events.
The faculty and students at Youngs Grove Elementary School began their The Countdown to Christmas with a Hat Day Fundraiser to support the new YGES Student Council.
A number of Santa hats were seen throughout the school. Christmas Sock Day really kicked in the Christmas season with students and faculty wearing crazy Christmas socks.
Frosty, Olaf and their friends were seen throughout the school as YGES celebrated Snowman Day.
Polar Express Day was enjoyed by all who wore Christmas pajamas to school. Each class scheduled time to watch “The Polar Express” movie, based on the classic Christmas book by Chris Van Allsburg.
Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer Day saw a number of reindeer, as well as Grandmas and Santa Claus and other characters from the song.
Students and faculty will also compete for the Tackiest Christmas Sweater.
They will welcome the citizens of Whoville and lots of Grinches for Grinch Day.
Staff members are decorating the cafeteria, and Kim Jarrett and the YGES cafeteria staff are preparing a special lunch for the students to enjoy a Winter Wonderland Christmas.
Dr. Kiley Thompson, principal of Youngs Grove Elementary School, has quizzed students daily about traditions associated with the holidays.
Students were asked to predict how long it took for the world’s largest snow person to melt. Olympia the SnowWoman, a 122-foot snow person built in Bethel, Maine, did not melt until the end of July.
When asked if they prefer cocoa with or without marshmallows, they overwhelmingly preferred cocoa with marshmallows than without.
Santa’s elves have also been visiting the Grove. An elf arrived in Ms. Knight’s Pre-K class in a package addressed to the students.
He brought candy canes for each of the students, and watched the students as they made gingerbread houses and tried to help them build a snowman. Some of the elves have created a bit of mischief.
One was stuck to the whiteboard with bows, and another entangled the room with streamers. Yet, the elves have helped Youngs Grove students be on their best behavior and they countdown to Christmas.
