The suspect is shot after the appliance store owner wrestles away the gun.
An attempted armed robbery at a Cedartown appliance store was thwarted by the business owner.
According to Cedartown Police, a man wearing a ski mask approached Rudy Wood’s Appliance and Home Furnishing store owner, Phil Smith, at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2. The store was in the process of closing for the evening. The suspect, later identified as former employee Matt Bridges, brandished a handgun and demanded money as Smith was locking up the store. A struggle ensued, and Smith was able to wrestle the handgun from the suspect. Smith fired the gun, hitting the suspect in the back.
Bridges was transported to a Rome area hospital for treatment. His condition was not known at press time. Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said the investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
