Baseball around the corner for Bulldogs and Jackets

- From staff reports

It might still be early January, but in just a few weeks time players will be heading out onto the ball field in chilly weather to get back into the swing of spring.

That’s right, baseball season is right around the corner. So get out the peanuts and cracker jacks and mark the calendar now for the Bulldogs and Jackets season openers. Both teams open their seasons on Feb. 12, with the Bulldogs hosting Coosa and Rockmart traveling to Cass when the baseball season opens next month.

A full baseball schedule was posted for Rockmart, with the rest of Cedartown’s schedule to follow. But one thing is for sure: both teams will face one another early. After the Bulldogs host Coosa on Feb. 12, and Rockmart faces Cass and then hosts Paulding County on Feb. 13, the Bulldogs host the Jackets in the first of the pair of rivalry showdowns on the baseball diamond.

The Jackets will host the second game on Feb. 27. Rockmart under the leadership of Kenny Yanzetich is looking to build off a big year, making it deep into the playoffs after winning the Region 7- AA championship in 2017, eventually falling to Jeff Davis in the quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs are seeking to improve after a big 2016 season, and falling behind a bit in 2017. Cedartown under head coach Doyle Kelley finished fourth in the region in spring 2017, going 20-7 on the season and 8-4 in 5- AAAA before getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by Marist. He returns for this season as well as taking on his football coaching duties.
