Cedartown commission swears in new member
The people have spoken and the results of November’s election are finally taking effect in Cedartown.
The city’s debut 2018 commissioner meeting saw Jordan Hubbard reappointed as Chairman and Matt Foster step up to the role of Chairman Pro- Tem. Jessica Payton was welcomed to the floor as the group’s newest commissioner, and the town’s elected body had no trouble moving through the year’s first set of business.
“I look forward to serving the people of Cedartown and encouraging more people to become involved in the city,” Payton said. “I’m excited to learn as much as I can to be able to help our citizens learn about how City government works and the best ways for the average citizen to become involved and accomplish the things they want to see happening in Cedartown.”
Like every year, recognitions and awards are given to employees seen as exceptional by the city. One of the possible awards includes the “Public Works Award” which was i ssued t o Wastewater and Water Chief Lab Technician Tracy Marlow.
Tax Clerk Mitzi Allen received the “Emily Shaw Administrative Award.” Jerry Jackson, a long- time firefighter, was recognized as the winner of the “Public Safety Award.”
Like Rockmart, Cedartown approved their firefighters for insurance, as mandated by a new state law. Effective Jan. 1, 2018 cities are required to provide extra insurance coverage to treat cancers that appear more frequently in firefighters.
Cedartown’s First United Methodist Church saw their request to use Peek Park approved, and the group will be hosting their annual Easter Sunrise Service in the park on April 1 from 6 to 8 a.m. The Sunrise Service is a common tradition in the South where congregations gather outdoors on Easter morning and watch the sunrise while speaking goes on. Anyone is welcome to attend.
The commissioners approved their business contract with Intertech Probation, but the deal was a mostly standard, formalized reinstating.
“It’s more of a renewal,” City Manager Bill Fann said. “They are really the only ones around here.”
The Cedartown Commission meets on the second Monday of each month at city hall on Philpot St. Meetings begin at 6 p.m.
