Local sorority hands out supplies for MLK project
Theta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s holiday and birthday Monday, January 15, 2018 by donating 32 backpacks filled with male hygiene products to two non-profit organizations. The Chapter encompasses Bartow, Carroll, Floyd, and Polk counties and makes a concerted effort to participate in activities and donates to organizations in each of the counties. For its MLK Day of Service Community Impact Day, the chapter members chose two organizations in Carroll County — Alice’s House and the Re-Entry Coalition, Inc.
According to its website, Alice’s House was established in 1997 and has served more than 250 children. The children come to the House for many reasons, including abuse, neglect and other challenging family situations. Its mission is to provide an environment in which the children can feel safe and thrive.
Alice’s House provides services based on the conviction that each youth in residence is an individual with the right to the kind of care that meets his or her needs. The organization believes it is important to preserve and strengthen each child’s family relationships whenever possible. Most children are placed in Alice’s House by the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services. Priority is given to the youth of Carroll County. The other recipient of Theta Omicron Omega Chapter’s MLK community service was the Re-Entry Coalition, Inc. The coalition reintegrates formerly incarcerated clients into the community, reducing recidivism through needed support and services following release from prison.
