Track teams score big at Rome HS meet

The Cedartown and Rockmart High track teams were in the thick of competitio­n late last week at Rome High School’s Track Invititaio­nal, with both the girls and boys programs scoring big against area foes.

Rockmart’s boys finished second and Cedartown boys third in overall team points, while the Lady Jackets also took second and the Lady Bulldogs fourth on the day at Barron Stadium.

Those included some notable finishes from local athletes.

Rockmart’s girls had a big day at Barron Stadium, coming away with several top finishes in races.

In the 100 meter dash, Cambree Stanley took second and Keyarah Berry fourth in the event. Berry also grabbed a win overall in the 200 meter dash and the high jump, with Stanley right behind with another second place finish in the 200 meter dash.

Makenize Kent added a second place finish in the 400 meter dash and Jie Holmes earned a second place finish for the 100 meter hurdls.

The Rockmart girls relay team also finished second in the 4x100 meter event, saw a third place fnish for Bailey Kennedy in the high jump, and a second place in pole vault for Mary Latrello.

For Rockmart’s boys, the Jackets saw Zabrion Whatley pull off back-toback wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Another f i rst place came for the Jackets in long jump, with Daylon Lester grabbing first with a 21 foot, 9 inch jump for the gold.

Paine Culver added a second place finish in the pole vault event, and Donte Williams added a second for shot put as well.

Chandler Cooper take a second place in the 800 meter run, and the relay team finished third in the 4x100 meter event.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs track program had a good day too.

Cedartown’s Taleayah Goodrum won the 300 meter hurdles in the meet, the only win they got for the day.

The Lady Bulldogs saw Kamryn Frazier take a third place in the 100 meter dash, finishing with a time of 13.34 seconds, and also a second place finish in the high jump, getting a leap recorded at 4 feet, 8 inches.

Grayson Smith had a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a finishing time of 29.94 seconds. The Lady Bulldogs also finished fourth in the relays.

Madison Wigley also earned a second place in discus with a 82 foot, 8 inch throw.

Tony Mathis and Trevon Wofford both earned second place finishes for the boys in events as well for Cedartown. Mathis finished the 300 meter hurdles in 44.54 seconds, and Wofford took a 5-foot- 8 high jump to grab second. Keshun Kent also earned a secnod place in the triple jump event.

Rockmart is expected to be back on the track for the Mohawk Invitation­al this weekend. Cedartown were set to host on Friday for the Cedartown High and Middle School Invitation­al, and were also set to be home next week on March 22 after an upcoming Tuesday home meet after press time.
