Man jailed in morn­ing wreck in Cedar­town

An early morn­ing on­eve­hi­cle wreck ended up be­ing the rea­son a lo­cal man started off his day go­ing to jail. It was not a good way to start off the week James Ca­wood Jr. of a Cedar­town ad­dress af­ter he was ar­rested fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent.

No in­jures were re­ported af­ter Ca­wood, who was driv- ing a 2005 GMC Canyon, struck a util­ity pole. He’d crossed over the cen­ter lane while he was al­leged to be driv­ing un­der the in­flu­ence near the in­ter­sec­tion of Canal and Main Streets ac­cord­ing to Cedar­town As­sis­tant Po­lice Chief Greg Cooper.

For­tu­nately, no one else was in­volved or hurt.

“It broke the pole in half,” Cooper said of the force of the wreck.

Ca­wood was first checked out med­i­cally at Polk Med­i­cal Cen­ter be­fore be­ing trans­ported to jail, where he was charged with driv­ing un­der the in­flu­ence, fail­ure to main­tain lane and strik­ing a fixed ob­ject.

He was later re­leased af­ter a day in jail on a $2,910 bond.
