Big day for RHS boy’s tennis
Team travels to Atlanta for day at BB&T Open, plays Kyrgios in doubles
The Rockmart High School boys tennis team did a brave thing in recent days.
After taking part in a harrowing rescue, they have been in front of audiences large and small getting appreciation from all corners for their heroics in helping to pull a injured man free after he was pinned under a vehicle in a wreck.
That deed was what got them into a chance for another trial by fire: playing tennis against a real professional touring across the globe.
Each and everyone of the Yellow Jackets boys tennis team got to play a doubles match with and against Australian pro Nick Kyrgios. He’s current ranked 18th in the world on the Association of Tennis Player’s list of the top talents.
“Nick was awesome with the kids and made sure they enjoyed the experience,” head coach Barry Owen said. “It was great of him to take the time to give our kids, as well as many others, this opportunity.”
They got the chance to play tennis with the star after the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and the BB&T Open tournament invited the team to take part in festivities around the
Atlanta-based event.
“They provided us with a fantastic experience and let the boys know they were appreciated,” Owen said.
Along with Kyrgios, the team also got to meet notable stars like Frances Tiafoe after his win over Marius Copil, and Donald Young after a win over Ivo Karlovic.
The team traveled to Atlanta for their day at the tournament on July 24.
It was still underway over the weekend at press time, but check back on next week’s Sports Book to find out who won.
