Cedartown makes change to rec volunteer policy

♦ Appeals process now exists to give those wanting to help a second chance

Those who want to volunteer as community coaches with the Cedartown Recreation Department, but don’t have an exactly spotless record now have a chance on a case-by-case basis to be given opportunities to serve.

The Cedartown City Commission voted during their September meeting to approve changes to the department’s volunteer background check policy which seeks to grant individuals who can show they’ve turned their lives around a second chance to give back.

Policy revisions were undertaken by Assistant City Manager Edward Guzman, who said the changes were undertaken after previous discussions over who can and can’t volunteer.

“We’re trying to help those who want to take part but were caught in bad situations years ago, and then years down the line have turned their lives around,” Guzman explained.

So how this will work is that non-violent and especially first offenders who have provided references from a variety of sources in the community – think a police officer, or judge, or pastor, etc. – who can vouch for the good character of a potential volunteer now can provide that information and appeal denials for volunteers who previously wanted to serve.

It won’t apply to anyone currently facing criminal charges for any reason, and those who want to appeal have to provide at least three letters of reference to be considered.

Additionally, automatic denials for volunteers who have a past criminal record that is either violent or sexual in nature remain in place, and no appeals under any circumstances will be considered. Guzman explained the idea was to give people second chances so long as they can prove they are deserving.

The appeals process includes the recreation director and assistant director, along with other officials who review background information and references to make a determination of how to move forward with applicants who were previously denied.

Guzman added before the commission gave their approval that they do have additional leeway over policy wording, should changes need to be made what was approved during their Monday, Sept. 10 session.

Those seeking more information about the new policy can contact the city at 770-748-3220.
