PREA back for school year at Sept. ses­sion

Polk Re­tired Ed­u­ca­tors As­so­ci­a­tion are back af­ter a sum­mer break and held their first meet­ing for the school year ear­lier in the month.

The Sept. 6, meet­ing headed by Pres­i­dent An­drea Sor­rells be­gan with a wel­come to mem­bers and guests, and an up­date on events that have taken place since the May meet­ing.

The Geor­gia Re­tired Ed­u­ca­tors As­so­ci­a­tion held its 60th Con­ven­tion in Ma­con this past May and the an­nual clus­ter meet­ing with other units across north­west Geor­gia were held back in Au­gust.

These events were at­tended by Sor­rells, Judy An­gle and Sharon Malone. One ma­jor topic of dis­cus­sion at both events are pro­posed health in­sur­ance pre­mi­ums.

The PREA theme for this year is “Share the Light”, wherein the Pres­i­dent en­cour­aged mem­bers to be­come more in­volved in our lo­cal group and our com­mu­nity. In con­nec­tion with the new theme, PREA will be rais­ing money to send to Chil­dren’s Health­care of At­lanta. The cur­rent fundraiser in­volves sell­ing Hon­o­rar­ium/Memo­rial Ads that will ap­pear in the PREA Hand­book. The Hand­book will be dis­trib­uted at Oc­to­ber Meet­ing. Those in­ter­ested in pur­chas­ing an ad can text ad orders to: an­drea­sor­[email protected] be­fore the Septem­ber 15th.

Pres­i­dent Sor­rells com­mended Mar­ion Wil­liams for her ef­forts in get­ting vol­un­teers to serve as Greeters for each meet­ing, some­one to lead the in­vo­ca­tion, and some­one to dec­o­rate ta­bles.

A list of New Re­tirees was dis­trib­uted, and mem­bers were asked to in­vite new re­tirees to the next PREA meet­ing. Past-Pres­i­dent Lynda Rut­land wel­comed two new re­tirees who were in at­ten­dance: Sher­rie Gar­rett and Jane Hack­ney.

PREA will host a Memo­rial Wall Ser­vice in Novem­ber to rec­og­nized Polk ed­u­ca­tors who have passed away.

The in­vo­ca­tion the Septem­ber meet­ing was led by Becky Hol­land who be­gan with a pas­sage from Psalms and con­nected it to a story which told of how a great day was mis­heard as grey day.

The next meet­ing of the PREA is com­ing up on Oc­to­ber 4, at the Chero­kee Golf and Coun­try Club at 11 a.m. Mem­bers and guest who at­tend have a chance to win door prizes dur­ing the up­com­ing meet­ing.
