PREA back for school year at Sept. session

- Staff reports

Polk Retired Educators Association are back after a summer break and held their first meeting for the school year earlier in the month.

The Sept. 6, meeting headed by President Andrea Sorrells began with a welcome to members and guests, and an update on events that have taken place since the May meeting.

The Georgia Retired Educators Association held its 60th Convention in Macon this past May and the annual cluster meeting with other units across northwest Georgia were held back in August.

These events were attended by Sorrells, Judy Angle and Sharon Malone. One major topic of discussion at both events are proposed health insurance premiums.

The PREA theme for this year is “Share the Light”, wherein the President encouraged members to become more involved in our local group and our community. In connection with the new theme, PREA will be raising money to send to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The current fundraiser involves selling Honorarium/Memorial Ads that will appear in the PREA Handbook. The Handbook will be distributed at October Meeting. Those interested in purchasing an ad can text ad orders to: andreasorrells@gmail.com before the September 15th.

President Sorrells commended Marion Williams for her efforts in getting volunteers to serve as Greeters for each meeting, someone to lead the invocation, and someone to decorate tables.

A list of New Retirees was distributed, and members were asked to invite new retirees to the next PREA meeting. Past-President Lynda Rutland welcomed two new retirees who were in attendance: Sherrie Garrett and Jane Hackney.

PREA will host a Memorial Wall Service in November to recognized Polk educators who have passed away.

The invocation the September meeting was led by Becky Holland who began with a passage from Psalms and connected it to a story which told of how a great day was misheard as grey day.

The next meeting of the PREA is coming up on October 4, at the Cherokee Golf and Country Club at 11 a.m. Members and guest who attend have a chance to win door prizes during the upcoming meeting.
