Volleyball teams heading to region play

- Staff reports

One Polk County volleyball team is looking forward to a chance to make it into state play, while another only has a single win on the season but is still in the running for a spot in the playoffs.

The Cedartown Lady Bulldogs are still enjoying a winning season as they get ready to play in the region playoffs with 5-4A, where they sit currently in third place with an overall record of 24-17, and 4-2 in region play.

Scores for two matches ahead of this week’s region tournament start on Tuesday after press time weren’t available for matches against Hiram and Armuchee on the road.

Cedartown’s success comes as Rockmart’s volleyball team continues to struggle as the season winds down.

The Lady Jackets sit at 1-31 according to the most recent available records for Rockmart at press time.

Rockmart’s only win on the season came against Georgia School for the Deaf, and with that it gives them the chance for a seat at the playoffs despite the losing record for the year.

They sit in fifth place in the region at 1-4 heading into region tournament play this week, with Coosa, Model, Pepperell and Armuchee all sitting ahead of the Lady Jackets.

Their Oct. 2 win over GSD broke a 29-game losing streak, which picked right back up at the end of last week with losses to Sonoraville and North Cobb Christian on the road.

Rockmart’s team will be back on the court this Saturday for the region tournament, with their opponent at the moment still to be determined at press time.
