Jesse Colvin will support students

The Star Democrat - - OPINION -

Community college was a lifeline for me as a mother and full-time dairy farmer. It provided an opportunity to pursue a degree and continue on to a master’s degree. Not only was it affordable, the location allowed me to do “everything” efficiently.

As technology continues to evolve, everyone needs additional training beyond high school to get a job that pays a living wage. Even farmers used computerized systems for tracking herd statistics before computers were in wide use.

Unfortunately, students are being priced out of further training or burdened with student loans way into their 40s. The news that the Consumer Protection Agency’s student loan section is not operating as designed (NPR – resignation letter of Seth Frothman), but is instead, being realigned to support large financial institutions, the same ones that in the recent past were deemed “too big to fail.” Where will this leave the lowly student — at the mercy of predatory lending with no recourse?

We need representatives in Congress who will speak up for us and ask the hard questions and insure that students are treated fairly and not submerged in debt for the rest of their lives.

That’s why I’m supporting Jesse Colvin for Congress — a person who will stand up for students and listen to the people he represents. PHYLLIS KILBY Colora
