ESCONDIDO, Cal. — Mar­garet Mary Gil­bert, of Escondido, CA, died Sun­day, Septem­ber 9, 2018 at the home of her dear friends, Karen and Ralph Rus­sum while up visit­ing for the sum­mer. She was 95.

Mar­garet Mary Gil­bert was born Dec. 4, 1922 in Van­blever, MD, the daugh­ter of the late Charles Nor­ris and Chris­tine “Lo­mar” Nor­ris. Mrs. Gil­bert was a 1939 grad­u­ate of Abing­don High School where shortly af­ter she grad­u­ated she mar­ried the late Earl J. Gil­bert and the two were mar­ried for 50 years. Mrs. Gil­bert briefly worked at Aberdeen Prov­ing Grounds while her hus­band was in the ser vice. In 1953 the two moved to Cal­i­for­nia and be­gan rais­ing tur­keys.

Mrs. Gil­bert would re­turn to the East­ern Shore ev­ery year to her farm and visit fam­ily and friends and en­joy the peace­ful seren­ity of the Ch­ester River and East­ern Shore liv­ing. Mrs. Gil­bert was a Life­time mem­ber of the VFW in Ansa, CA. She loved to travel the world, go to auc­tions, shop, eat­ing in restau­rants and loved hear­ing sto­ries from her friends and fam­ily about their hunt­ing and fish­ing ex­pe­ri­ences on her farm. Ms. Gil­bert had a zest for life that was in­fec­tious. Her fam­ily and friends de­scribed her as cu­ri­ous, in­ter­ested in any­thing new, spunky, de­ter­mined, full of en­ergy, car­ing, feisty, a heart of love and a never give up spirit for liv­ing. She liked to be cur­rent in the world and re­li­giously read the news­pa­per from front to back. Af­ter her hus­band passed she spent 22 years with her good friend and com­pan­ion, the late JP Wagoner.

She is sur­vived by her brother, Clai­borne Nor­ris (Carolyn) of Chestertown, MD; ex­tended fam­ily, Ralph and Karen Rus­sum, JR, Jen, Abby, Wy­att Rus­sum, Julie, Robert, Emily, and Nate Smith, Paul Hin­kle of Idaho, Deb­o­rah Hin­kle of In­di­ana, Mary Pfeifer of Ari­zona, Jerry Van­der­dussen; niece, Bev­erly Hawes and fam­ily of Bel Air, MD, Jim and Ge­or­gette Ha­ley, Cathy We­seloh and Mar­sha and Bon­nie and Jim Men­den­hall.

A visi­ta­tion will be held Satur­day, Septem­ber 15, 2018 from 3-4 p.m. at Fel­lows Fam­ily Funeral Home 379 Cy­press St. Milling­ton, MD 21651. A time of shar­ing and Cel­e­bra­tion will be held at 4 p.m.

A re­cep­tion will fol­low also at the funeral home with light food and re­fresh­ment. Burial will take place in Trin­ity Lutheran Ceme­tery in Joppa, MD, at a later date.
