Charles Joseph Carpenter Sr.
QUEENSTOWN — Charles Joseph Carpenter Sr. of Queenstown, MD, passed away November 30, 2018 at Compass Regional Hospice Center in Centreville, MD. He was 83.
Born on July 5, 1935 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Claude and Mary (Willet) Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 17, and later met and married his only wife, Carolyn (Litton-Smith) Fortin, who preceded him in death. After discharge, he joined civil ser vice with NOAA, earning many accolades on projects with NASA, development of testing equipment for deep ocean exploration and mapping, and sonar. He spent many years traveling the oceans collecting data from deep ocean trenches and some of the highest peaks to calibrate telescopes. His last 15 years were spent
employed at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. He retired after 47 years in service.
Charles is survived by his children: Mary Rose Schoene (Les), of Queenstown, MD; Charles Joseph Carpenter Jr. (Jeannie), of Chester, MD; six grandchildren: Jennifer Schoene Marshall (James), Eric Schoene, Austin Carpenter, Ryan Carpenter (Mary), Brandie Nelson and Aaron Ferrel. Charles was Greatpop to nine great grandchildren: Chace, Abbigail, Trenten, Logan, Stone and Owen Marshall, Kaleb Schneider, Landen Schoene and Jensen Carpenter.
