Charles Joseph Car­pen­ter Sr.

QUEENSTOWN — Charles Joseph Car­pen­ter Sr. of Queenstown, MD, passed away Novem­ber 30, 2018 at Com­pass Re­gional Hos­pice Cen­ter in Centreville, MD. He was 83.

Born on July 5, 1935 in Wash­ing­ton, D.C., he was the son of the late Claude and Mary (Wil­let) Car­pen­ter.

Mr. Car­pen­ter joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 17, and later met and mar­ried his only wife, Carolyn (Lit­ton-Smith) Fortin, who pre­ceded him in death. Af­ter dis­charge, he joined civil ser vice with NOAA, earn­ing many ac­co­lades on projects with NASA, de­vel­op­ment of test­ing equip­ment for deep ocean ex­plo­ration and map­ping, and sonar. He spent many years trav­el­ing the oceans col­lect­ing data from deep ocean trenches and some of the high­est peaks to cal­i­brate tele­scopes. His last 15 years were spent

em­ployed at the Naval Ob­ser­va­tory in Wash­ing­ton, D.C. He re­tired af­ter 47 years in ser­vice.

Charles is sur­vived by his chil­dren: Mary Rose Schoene (Les), of Queenstown, MD; Charles Joseph Car­pen­ter Jr. (Jean­nie), of Ch­ester, MD; six grand­chil­dren: Jen­nifer Schoene Mar­shall (James), Eric Schoene, Austin Car­pen­ter, Ryan Car­pen­ter (Mary), Brandie Nel­son and Aaron Fer­rel. Charles was Great­pop to nine great grand­chil­dren: Chace, Ab­bi­gail, Trenten, Lo­gan, Stone and Owen Mar­shall, Kaleb Sch­nei­der, Lan­den Schoene and Jensen Car­pen­ter.
