Hol­i­day spirit fills Christ­mas pa­rade in Cam­bridge

CAM­BRIDGE — More than 90 en­tries par­tic­i­pated in the 70th an­nual Cam­bridge-Dorch­ester County Christ­mas Pa­rade Satur­day, Dec. 1.

The pa­rade route be­gan at Long Wharf Park, and par­tic­i­pants trav­eled down High Street. Par­tic­i­pates turned left on Po­plar Street and con­tin­ued all the way through Race Street.

Mardela Mid­dle and High School placed first out of high school bands with 96.5 points. Fol­low­ing Mardela were North Dorch­ester High School with 88.3 points and Cam­bridge-South Dorch­ester High School with 74.6 points, re­spec­tively.

In the mid­dle school band cat­e­gory, Maple El­e­men­tary School placed first with 87.2 points. Maces Lane Mid­dle School placed sec­ond with 77.4 points, and North Dorch­ester Mid­dle School was third with 74 points.

North Dorch­ester High School re­ceived the award for Best Drum Ma­jor.

Mardela Mid­dle and High School swept the re­main­ing band award cat­e­gories, which were Best Band Front, Best Per­cus­sion and Best Over­all.

Floats and cars in the pa­rade were judged in nine sep­a­rate cat­e­gories.

Chop­tank An­i­mal Hos­pi­tal took home the award for Best Com­mer­cial Float, while Horn Point Lab­o­ra­tory was judged as the best Non-Com­mer­cial Adult Float.

For the best Non-Com­mer­cial Youth Float, Cam­bridge Lit­tle League re­ceived the award.

Spicer Hill Farms had the best Eques­trian Unit dur­ing the Cam­bridge-Dorch­ester County Christ­mas Pa­rade and the De­struc­tive Black Di­a­monds were voted as the best March­ing Unit on Foot. The Hooper Is­land Fire Depart­ment was voted as the best dis­play of fire de­part­ments.

Two awards were given to the best cars dis­played in the pa­rade. For the best An­tique Auto, 19001948, Tri Gas and Oil took home the award. For Clas­sic Auto, 19491989, Eu­gene Nal­ley was voted the win­ner.

The Best School Spon­sored Club was Cam­bridge-South Dorch­ester Cross Coun­try Team and the Judge’s Choice Award went to Habi­tat for Hu­man­ity.

The hol­i­day fes­tiv­i­ties con­tinue with Cam­bridge Res­cue Fire Com­pany’s 84th an­nual Christ­mas Train Gar­den, which runs

through Tues­day, Dec. 31, for the at 311 Gay Street. The train gar­den has been com­pletely de­signed. It is open from 6 to 9 p.m. Mon­day through Fri­day and 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Satur­days and Sun­days. The train gar­den is free and do­na­tions are wel­comed.

The Hur­lock Christ­mas Pa­rade will be­gin at 5 p.m., start­ing at the in­ter­sec­tion of Route 331 and Thomp­son Street. The route will travel up Main Street. More in­for­ma­tion is avail­able at https:// www.face­book.com/hur­lock.gov.

The town of Cam­bridge also will host an Old Fash­ioned Christ­mas Sec­ond Satur­day event, from noon to 8 p.m. Dec. 8. Car­riage rides from Sim­mons Cen­ter Mar­ket will be avail­able from 5 to 8 p.m., along with a visit by Santa and car­ol­ers at the same time, be­tween 5 and 8 p.m.

A Sec­ond Satur­day pro­mo­tional prize will be drawn for par­tic­i­pat­ing con­tes­tants at 8 p.m. Live mu­sic also will be pre­formed by Ginger Cats at the Black Wa­ter Bak­ery.
