Why focus on the gun?
As recently noted, the numbers of deaths resulting from alcohol abuse, automobile accidents and firearms are very similar, but we must also consider the purpose of these products. The primary purpose of an automobile is to provide transportation. Automobiles may wound or kill us, but that is not their primary function. Alcohol is perhaps less useful, but is traditionally celebratory and more frequently kills the imbiber when abused.
We focus on the gun because its primary function is to kill, and we know that higher rates of firearm death are found in states with higher rates of gun ownership.
