After World War II, there were still rationing and shortages. In 1947, President Harry Truman discourage­d families from having pumpkin pie at Thanksgivi­ng.

Around 1621, the Plymouth settlers were gifted pumpkins by Native Americans. The first pumpkin pie is thought to have been a hollowed-out pumpkin filled with simple ingredient­s like milk, honey and spices, then slowcooked over hot coals and ashes.
