Pedestrian struck, killed on New Year’s Day


GRASONVILL­E — Queen Anne’s County experience­d its first death of the new year shortly after midnight Jan. 1 — a pedestrian fatality.

Maryland State Police responded to U.S. Route 50/301 west at Chester River Bridge Road at 12:18 a.m. New Year’s Day for reports of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Police said a 2016 Kenworth truck pulling a trailer struck Thi Thanh Hang Tran, 40, of Fruitland, who was on foot in the center lane of the three-lane highway. Emergency medical services responders declared Tran dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigat­ion, police said.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded. Maryland State Highway Administra­tion assisted with the closure and detour of U.S. Route 50/301 west. The road was closed for about four and a half hours.

Police did not release the identity of the tractor trailer driver or give any reason for Tran being in the middle of the highway.
