Sand­gren, Nor­rie to meet in Auck­land fi­nal

Ten­nys Sand­gren is head­ing to the Aus­tralian Open in ca­reer-best form after beat­ing Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2 to reach the ASB Clas­sic fi­nal on Fri­day in Auck­land, New Zealand.

In Saturday’s fi­nal he will face Bri­tish wild card Cameron Nor­rie, who reached his first ATP fi­nal by de­feat­ing Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5. 4- 6, 6-3.

Nor­rie was born in South Africa and plays for Bri­tain but was raised in Auck­land.

Ho­bart In­ter­na­tional:

Amer­i­can Sofia Kenin ad­vanced Fi­nals in Ho­bart, Aus­tralia, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Al­ize Cor­net. Kenin will play Anna Karolina Sch­miedlova.

Syd­ney In­ter­na­tional:

Ash­leigh Barty con­tin­ued her strong run at the Syd­ney In­ter­na­tional with a semi­fi­nal win over Kiki Bertens, beat­ing the Dutch player 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5. She will play Pe­tra Kvi­tova or Ali­ak­san­dra Sas­novich in Saturday’s fi­nal.

● Gor­don Smith, long­time CEO and ex­ec­u­tive direc­tor of the U.S. Tennis As­so­ci­a­tion, will re­tire at the end of the 2019 after 12 years on the job. Un­der Smith, the na­tional gov­ern­ing body fin­ished the five-year, $600 mil­lion transformation of the USTA Bil­lie Jean King Na­tional Tennis Cen­ter.


Stock­holm bid: Swe­den’s Olympic lead­ers met a dead­line Fri­day to sub­mit a 2026 Win­ter Games host­ing plan after sat­is­fy­ing con­cerns of law­mak­ers in Stock­holm which threat­ened to end the bid last year. The bid cam­paign was at risk in Oc­to­ber when Stock­holm’s new city govern­ment coali­tion cast doubts about spend­ing tax­payer money on the two-week event and asked the Swedish Olympic Com­mit­tee for more de­tails.
