Sandgren, Norrie to meet in Auckland final
Tennys Sandgren is heading to the Australian Open in career-best form after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2 to reach the ASB Classic final on Friday in Auckland, New Zealand.
In Saturday’s final he will face British wild card Cameron Norrie, who reached his first ATP final by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 7-5. 4- 6, 6-3.
Norrie was born in South Africa and plays for Britain but was raised in Auckland.
American Sofia Kenin advanced Finals in Hobart, Australia, with a 6-2, 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Alize Cornet. Kenin will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Ashleigh Barty continued her strong run at the Sydney International with a semifinal win over Kiki Bertens, beating the Dutch player 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5. She will play Petra Kvitova or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Saturday’s final.
● Gordon Smith, longtime CEO and executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association, will retire at the end of the 2019 after 12 years on the job. Under Smith, the national governing body finished the five-year, $600 million transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Stockholm bid: Sweden’s Olympic leaders met a deadline Friday to submit a 2026 Winter Games hosting plan after satisfying concerns of lawmakers in Stockholm which threatened to end the bid last year. The bid campaign was at risk in October when Stockholm’s new city government coalition cast doubts about spending taxpayer money on the two-week event and asked the Swedish Olympic Committee for more details.
