22-year-old man hurt in shooting

Incident was outside duplex on Lakeview Avenue Sunday

Dracut » Police are investigat­ing the shooting of a 22-year-old Dracut man that took place on Lakeview Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Dracut Police said they first received reports of gunshots fired outside a duplex at 1130/1132 Lakeview Ave. shortly before 2:30 p.m. Emergency crews arrived on scene to find the 22-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was treated on scene and then transporte­d by ambulance to an area hospital for further treatment.

Police said they searched the area but were unable to locate a suspect.

Lymarie Cora, who identified herself as the mother of the victim, said the shooting took place right outside her duplex at 1130/1132 Lakeview Ave.

The distraught mother spoke briefly about the incident from doorstep about two and a half hours after the shooting occurred.

Cora said she was inside her home when she heard a gunshot. She looked outside to see her son on the ground.

Cora said that she was unsure who would have shot her son, adding she was on her way to the hospital to be with him.

“They’re doing a surgery to remove the bullet,” she said.

Reports of an injured man down in front of the duplex came over the emergency radio broadcast around 2:30 p.m. Emergency crews on scene said the victim was “conscious and alert” before they loaded him into an ambulance.

Moments after the shooting was reported over the broadcast a witness told police on scene that the victim had just gotten out of the rear of a vehicle when gunshots rang out from another vehicle. According to the report, the witness told police the suspect vehicle sped away westher bound on Lakeview Avenue.

Surveillan­ce footage that was reviewed by police captured a gray vehicle that might have been involved in the shooting leaving the scene. A make or model of the vehicle was unavailabl­e.

A witness on Lakeview Avenue — who identified herself only as Jan — said she was inside her home when she heard “a pop.” She did not see anything unusual outside her apartment and assumed the sound was made by a passing vehicle.
