Tewksbury track stars claim Division 4 titles

- Staff Report

Alex Arbogast got some revenge en route to gaining something far more important — a state title.

The Tewksbury High senior posted the second-fastest seed time in the 200 behind Pembroke's Andrew Gleason. Arbogast remembered his disappointing third-place finish in the All-state indoor championships, where Gleason took the win.

But the determined Arbogast went out fast at the gun and was still pulling away when he broke the finish line for an enormously satisfying win in 22.23 seconds at the Division 4 Outdoor Track Championship in Hingham.

Gleason was second in 22.42.

Arbogast admitted he was still stinging from the loss at All-states last winter.

"I was watching the video of me falling at the end and that hurt," the University of Rhode Island-bound talent told the Boston Herald. "I was happy for him (Gleason). That's how this sport is. I was seeded first and was supposed to win that race by a lot. Once I knew I had it (Friday's win) it felt so good. People knew how much I wanted it."

Tewksbury's Elijah Achonlu also became a state champion when he captured the triple jump title (43 feet, 4.25 inches), while teammate Ryan Cuvier placed second in the event. Paxton Green claimed third in the pentathlon.

On the girls side, Jayani Santos ran to third in a very fast 200 race in 25.33 seconds.
