Lowell celebrates summer’s start with movies and a gala at MRT

Summer officially gets underway in Lowell with free movies and the MRT gala celebratio­n.

Take in a movie under the stars at dusk on Saturday, June 3, in Kerouac Park, 75 Bridge Street, Lowell.

It’s a free screening of “The Princess Bride,” and it’s part of the new Book to Film partnershi­p between the Lowell Film Collaborat­ive and Lala Books.

They’ve already read the book and discussed it in May. But you can still read and discuss “Like Water for Chocolate” on Sunday, Aug. 6, and “PUSH” by Sapphire on Sunday, Sept. 10, then see the film adaptation­s a few days later. Discussion­s are 2:30-4 p.m. at Lala Books, 189 Market St., Lowell.

“Like Water for Chocolate” screens on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and “Precious” based on “PUSH” screens on Tuesday, Sept. 19. These free screenings are at 6:30 p.m. at Luna Theater, Mill No. 5, 250 Jackson Street, 4th Floor, Lowell.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre hosts its 44th Anniversar­y Gala on Friday, June 9, at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Starting at 6 p.m., the fun-filled evening includes a lively dinner, silent and live auctions, highlights of MRT’S 44th season, and a once-in-a-lifetime musical performanc­e by singer-pianist Todd Alsup, performing excerpts from his show “Elton Undressed,” featuring the hits of Elton John.

The silent auction is already online and features such interestin­g items as sports and theater tickets, sand-sculpting lessons, a golf outing, wine and cocktail packages, and a backyard fire pit.
