Hogan tosses gem, Tyngsboro blanks Abington

Kiley Hogan was overpoweri­ng in the circle again in leading the Tyngsboro High softball team to a 7-0 shutout win over Abington during a Division 4 quarterfin­al on Tuesday in Tyngsboro.

Hogan went the distance, striking out 11, walking two and scattering four hits. Offensivel­y, Izzi Shaffer went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Elisabeth Sillipp also went deep, clubbing a two-run homer as part of a 2-for-3 day.

Danielle Walburn (1-for-1) and Hogan (1-for-2) added RBI doubles.

No. 4 Tyngsboro (16-4) will host the Wahconah/archbishop Williams winner on Friday (4 p.m.).

WAKEFIELD 12, WILMINGTON 11 >> Wakefield battled back and eliminated the Wildcats in a Div. 2 first-round, high-scoring contest. Wakefield’s Paige Butland slugged three home runs to oust No. 17 Wilmington (12-9).

During the regular season, the Middlesex League rivals met twice with the Wildcats winning both, 4-3 and 17-4.

This time, Wakefield jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, Wilmington rallied to take a 10-5 lead in the fourth before the Warriors scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-10 lead. Wilmington scored once in the top of the seventh before Wakefield walked off with the win in the bottom of the seventh.

Charlotte Forcina had a threerun double in the third for Wilmington, while others driving in runs were senior Sofia Scalfani, Eva Boudreau, Ali Mcelligott, Julia Archer and Lily Mackenzie.

Boys tennis

WESTFORD 3, NEEDHAM 2 >> The Ghosts punched their ticket to the elite 8 with a narrow Div. 1 quarterfin­al round win on the road over No. 8 Needham.

Connor Liona remained undefeated at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 waltz. Saunak Mann was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles and Will Owen dug down deep to capture a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles for the Ghosts.

No. 9 Westford (10-6) advances to play at top-seeded and undefeated Brookline (21-0) on Thursday (4 p.m.) at Waldstein Playground.

Girls tennis

HINGHAM 3, WESTFORD 2 >> The Ghosts were ousted in a Div. 1 quarterfin­al by an uncommonly strong No. 10 seed in Hingham (20-2).

No. 7 Westford ends 12-6 after a narrow loss to visiting Hingham.

FOXBORO 3, WILMINGTON 2 >> In a match postponed twice by rain, the Wildcats were edged by “host” Foxboro at an indoor facility in Woburn. No. 18 Wilmington (4-14) fell in a tightly-contest Div. 3 round of 32 match.

Baseball

LOWELL CATHOLIC 3, LEICESTER 1 >> The Crusaders advanced to the round of 16 with an impressive Div. 4 victory thanks in large part to the arm of Sean Mcnamara, who struck out 15 batters and allowed just one hit.

Lowell Catholic scored twice in the bottom of the first and once in the fifth. Seamus Scott had two singles and a two-run hit in the first. Brady Prindle and Dan Parent both singled and scored a run. Brendan Owens had a sacrifice fly and RBI.

No. 16 Lowell Catholic (13-8) returns to action Wednesday to play at top-seeded Bellingham (14-7) at 6 p.m.

GHOSTS HONORED >> Dual County League champion Westford Academy is well represente­d on the league’s all-star team.

Senior pitcher/outfielder Matt Morash was named the Thorpe Player of the Year. Named DCL All-league with Morash were junior pitcher/of Jake Cullen and junior catcher James Mcdermott.

Named DCL All-stars for the Thorpe Division were junior pitcher/third baseman

Nick Bonica, senior shortstop Ben Mulgrew and senior pitcher Kevin Fitzgerald.
