UML secures $2.5M for Asian American leadership training

LOWELL » Umass Lowell recently announced receiving a $2.5 million grant that will be used to develop Asian American student leadership training.

The grant from the

U.S. Department of Education’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutio­ns will expand the work of the university’s Asian American Center for Engagement and Excellence, which is part of a collaborat­ion with Umass Boston. The grant builds on Umass Lowell’s $1.5 million 2021 grant to launch the center.

Umass Lowell states the grant has three goals, which include developing a more detailed, broader image of Asian American students’ experience­s in higher education and to increase awareness of this demographi­c on campus; focusing on the outcomes of Asian American students by investing in leadership developmen­t activities, advocacy and career readiness programmin­g; and increasing the number of highneed, low-income Asian American students who enroll at Umass Lowell. sponsorshi­p opportunit­ies that range in cost from $250 to $2,000.

Proceeds will assist NEMLEC’S training programs, including NEMLEC SWAT/RRT/K-9 training, NEMLEC Motor Unit Annual training, NEMLEC STARS training, basic and advanced criminal investigat­ion training, school and business safety summits, and active shooter training. The programs are available to officers in the NEMLEC region, which comprises 65 law enforcemen­t agencies in Middlesex and Essex counties.

The money also will be used to support local charities, including Cops for Kids with Cancer.
