UML secures $2.5M for Asian American leadership training
LOWELL » Umass Lowell recently announced receiving a $2.5 million grant that will be used to develop Asian American student leadership training.
The grant from the
U.S. Department of Education’s Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institutions will expand the work of the university’s Asian American Center for Engagement and Excellence, which is part of a collaboration with Umass Boston. The grant builds on Umass Lowell’s $1.5 million 2021 grant to launch the center.
Umass Lowell states the grant has three goals, which include developing a more detailed, broader image of Asian American students’ experiences in higher education and to increase awareness of this demographic on campus; focusing on the outcomes of Asian American students by investing in leadership development activities, advocacy and career readiness programming; and increasing the number of highneed, low-income Asian American students who enroll at Umass Lowell. sponsorship opportunities that range in cost from $250 to $2,000.
Proceeds will assist NEMLEC’S training programs, including NEMLEC SWAT/RRT/K-9 training, NEMLEC Motor Unit Annual training, NEMLEC STARS training, basic and advanced criminal investigation training, school and business safety summits, and active shooter training. The programs are available to officers in the NEMLEC region, which comprises 65 law enforcement agencies in Middlesex and Essex counties.
The money also will be used to support local charities, including Cops for Kids with Cancer.
