TEWKSBURY PINS DOWN DIV. 3 CHAMPIONSH­IP

Shawsheen Tech tops Lowell, finishes undefeated season

The Tewksbury High wrestling team pinned down the Division 3 dual meet state championsh­ip Saturday.

The Redmen collected a 6018 first-round win over Scituate, rolled to a 44-30 victory over Ashland in the semifinals and then dominated Foxboro in the championsh­ip match, 58-21.

Going undefeated (3-0) on the day and leading Tewksbury to the title were Jack Lightfoot at 106 pounds, Nick Desisto at 113, Ben Barrasso at 120, Angelo Desisto at 126, Ryan Callahan at 138, Hunter Johnson at 150/157 and Manny Mengata at 215.

Johnson was honored for capturing his 100th career victory.

Picking up two wins were Cam Heichman at 144, Sam Macmillan at 157/165 and Marcus Ramos at 285.

ST GOES UNDEFEATED >> For the first time in school history, Shawsheen Tech went undefeated (26-0). The Rams captured the Travis Yell Memorial Duals by defeating Lowell in the final.

Lowell went 4-1, defeating Winchester, Marblehead, Essex Tech and Whittier Tech. Emmett Logan went 5-0 and earned the Outstandin­g Wrestler award for his efforts.

WILMINGTON GOES 2-1 >> The Wildcats picked up victories over Quabbin (36-30) and Nashoba Tech (42-30), and fell to Triton Regional (60-17).

Going 3-0 on the day were Julien Cella at 150 (17-1 tech fall, pin, pin) and Mohaned Said at 190 (pin, pin, pin).

Winning two matches for the Wildcats were Nikolaos Iascone at 165 (pin, pin) and Clyde Lambert at 285 (pin, pin).

Also winning against Nashoba Tech was Nicholas Corsetti at 132 (pin). Nashoba Tech received wins against Wilmington from Kam Graf at 144 (pin), Caio Saraiva at 175 (pin) and Christian Montalvo at 215 (pin). GRYPHONS GO 2-1 >> Greater Lowell Tech defeated Reading, 51-24, and Cambridge, 48-31, and fell to Silver Lake, 42-36.

Triple winners on the day were Antoine Jackman at 106 with three pins, Gabe Stickney at 150 with three pins and Aviren Chitpaseut­h at 190 with three pins. Greater Lowell (189) wraps up its season Wednesday with Senior Night against Westford Academy.

Boys hockey

LITTLETON 2, FITCHBURG 1 >> Gavin Werling produced a goal and assist to power Littleton/bromfield to the narrow victory.

Conor Glew also found the back of the net, while Zack Lizotte earned an assist. Littleton/bromfield, which held a big 32-12 shots advantage, received 11 saves from Charles Becker at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg. DRACUT/TYNGSBORO 6, LOWELL 1 >> Dracut/tyngsboro clinched a playoff sport for the third consecutiv­e season with an impressive win at Janas Rink in Lowell.

Ned Akashian pocketed an early score for Lowell’s lone goal. It was 1-1 after one period before Dracut/tyngsboro pulled away. TEWKSBURY 5, BOSTON LATIN 1 >> Tyler Barnes scored once and dished out two assists to power the Redmen at the Breakaway Ice Center.

Tewksbury (11-1) shook off an early deficit to lead 3-1 one after period thanks to goals by Barnes, Matt Cooke and Jason Shrennan. Jay Lavoie and Jeremy Insogna also sent shots into Boston Latin’s net. Also collecting a pair of assists were Kevin Andriolo and Jake Cunha.

Owen Sovie kicked out 13 of 14 shots.

ST 3, LOWELL CATHOLIC 2

The Rams of Shawsheen Tech edged the Crusaders during a hard-fought game before a big crowd at the Chelmsford Forum.

Shawsheen locked up the CAC championsh­ip thanks to goals from Chase Darcey, Larry Cullity and Jacoby Patterson.

NM 3, BLACKSTONE VALLEY 2 >> Max Caliri broke a 2-2 deadlock at 4:33 of the third period to lift North Middlesex to a thrilling victory in Hopedale.

Caliri had an outstandin­g game, as he dished out two assists to figure in all three goals. It was a strong win for the Patriots (8-7) over Blackstone Valley (13-3). Sean Myers was also immense, finishing with two goals and an assist to match Caliri’s offensive production.

Between the pipes, Jack Murphy was solid in stopping 24 shots.

Girls hockey

BG 3, BERLIN 2 >> Aine Kelly pocketed two goals, including the winner in overtime, as Bishop Guertin picked up an exciting win.

Gracie Menicci also scored for the Cardinals. Grace Spanger set up the overtime goal. Carly Green, Katherine Oskirko, Riley Goldthwait­e each had assists.

PLNR 6, SHAWSHEEN/BEDFORD 3 >> Despite a one-goal, two-assist performanc­e from freshman forward Becca Sobol, Shawsheen/bedford was defeated in Peabody.

Also scoring goals were freshmen forwards Sophia Demeo and Sophia Babington.

Boys track

MID-WACH >> Groton-dunstable (75.5) finished second at the Mid-wach B championsh­ip, trailing only Nashoba Regional (133).

North Middlesex (52) took third, followed by Leominster (42), Marlboro (36.5) and Lunenburg (19).

NM’S Quinn Mathe was the high jump champ with an effort of 6 feet, 2 inches. Teammate Samuel Donovan captured the two mile in 10:19.6. Groton-dunstable received a win from Zak Metzger in the 1,000 in 2:46.03.

Groton-dunstable won the 4×200 relay in 1:39.99, while North Middlesex claimed the 4×400 relay in 3:59.09.

Girls basketball

PELHAM 54, SANBORN 19 >> Pelham raced out to a 15-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back in posting the NHIAA Div. 2 win.

Liv Todd, Sophia Guinazzo and Grace Riley scored in double digits to lead the way. The balanced Pythons had 11 players score.

Boys basketball

GROTON-DUNSTABLE 56, MARLBORO 45 >> The Crusaders received a team-high 21 points from Zachary Romich to post the Mid-wach win.

Adding 11 points apiece for Groton-dunstable were Matt Fuccione and Gus Tidale. BILLERICA 60, LOWELL 57 >> The Indians held off powerful Lowell during a thrilling MVC encounter on Friday night.

Brady Martin produced a performanc­e to remember, netting 33 points. Inside, Cole Dillon was tough with 16 rebounds, while Amir Mahrez contribute­d 14 points. Marcus Lozius also shined for Billerica (4-9, 4-7 MVC).

LC 62, GR. LAWRENCE 54 >> Lowell Catholic captured a tough CAC victory at home Friday at Keith Gymnasium. The Crusaders are 6-8, 6-3 in league.

College basketball

UML MEN FALL >> Host Umass Lowell dropped its second straight home game, as hot-shooting New Hampshire collected an 89-73 victory at the Costello Athletic Center.

UNH (13-8) shot 14-for-27 from 3-point land and went 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Umass Lowell (15-6, 6-2 America East) was cold from beyond the stripe. The River Hawks were just 6-for-25 on 3-point attempts.

The River Hawks couldn’t stop UNH’S two-headed monster of Clarence Daniels and Jaxson Baker. Daniels finished with a game-high 32 points, while Baker chipped in 28 points.

For UML, Quinton Mincey netted 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Max Brooks (14), Ayinde Hikim (12) and Brayden O’connor (10). The Wildcats led 4639 at halftime.

UML WOMEN TOPPED Umass Lowell fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats, 66-52, at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, N.H.

Graduate student Mili Carrera (Lima, Peru) led the River Hawks (3-18, 3-6 AE) with 15 points, and added two assists and two steals. Redshirt junior Sydney Watkins (Indianapol­is, Ind.) scored 12 points and had a team-high four steals. Freshman Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied 11 points with three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Both sides got off to a slow start from the field, shooting a combined 0-for-6 in the early stages. New Hampshire jumped in front with a triple just under three minutes into the game. Mili Carrera’s three ended a 5-0 run for the Wildcats and get the River Hawks on the board.

Boston returns to Profession­al Women’s Hockey League action Sunday (3:30 p.m.) by hosting Montreal at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

It will be Boston’s seventh game in franchise history. Boston (4-2) is tied for third with 10 points, five behind Montreal, which is tied for first place and has played two more games. In a Jan. 13 clash, Boston defeated Montreal,

3-2.

Alina Muller leads Boston in scoring. Her nine points tie her for the league lead with New York’s Alex Carpenter and her seven assists lead the league.
