Tewksbury gymnasts fourth at MVC championsh­ip

The Tewksbury High girls gymnastics team finished fourth at the Merrimack Valley Conference championsh­ip meet Thursday night at A2 Gymnastics in Salem, N.H.

The Redmen didn’t leave the gym empty-handed — for the third consecutiv­e year they received the Sportsmans­hip Award. Tewksbury compiled a score of 122.40.

Central Catholic stormed to the team championsh­ip, tying its school record with an outstandin­g 151.75 score. The Raiders earned 11 of a possible 15 medals.

Capturing the allaround title was Zinnia Hopkinson.

Boys hockey

LOWELL 6, LYNN 1 >> Sophomore Ned Akashian scored four goals as visiting Lowell defeated Lynn in a non-league matchup.

Freshman Kyle Novo and eighth-grader Maddie Akashian had the other goals for the Red Raiders. Senior Teddy Steinberg, junior Marcus Novo, freshman Danny Gleason, and eighth-graders Brodie Anderson and Jack Blaschke had one assist apiece. Sophomore Grady Avila earned the win in goal with some important saves, including one on a penalty shot.

DRACUT/TYNGSBORO 3, L/B 1>> The visitors received from a goal and assist from Mikey Desmarais to skate past Littleton/ Bromfield at the Groton School.

Also scoring goals for the winners were Drew Duross and Christos Panagakis. Adding assists were Luke Teta, Chad Vigeant and Colin Underwood. For Littleton/ Bromfield, the goal was scored by Liam Glew after passes by Fin Piekos and Andrew Archer.

Wrestling

PELHAM GOES 2-0 >> The Pythons defeated White Mountains, 60-18, and Mascoma Valley, 54-18, to improve to 20-6.

Earning two pin victories were Ben Maslanek at 138, Nathan Maslanek at 150, Michael Harrington at 157, Russell Leonard at 190 and Victor Zannoni at 285. Also going 2-0 were Lex Kiernan at 106 (2 forfeits), Hunter Knight at 113 (8-2 dec., pin), Matt Raymond at 120 (10-4 dec., forfeit), Drew Nicolosi at 132 (forfeit, 8-6 dec.) and Philippe Jussaume at 144 (forfeit, 4-2

dec.).

Boys basketball

WAYLAND 64, INNOVATION 46 >> The Hawks fell to the Dual County League member during a nonleague clash. Wayland’s Ido Geffen netted 14 points.

BILLERICA 69, TYNGSBORO 63 >> Playing on the road in Tyngsboro, Billerica’s Brady Martin enjoyed a night he won’t soon forget.

The sharpshoot­er scored a school-record 46 points to power the Indians to the come-from-behind victory. Incredibly, 27 of the points came in the fourth quarter.

Josiah Twebaze added seven points and seven rebounds, while Ryan Jacobs added four assists and terrific defense for Billerica (6-9).

For Tyngsboro, Bryce Goulet led the way with 19 points, followed by Gavin Familia’s 17 points, six rebounds and four assists, and TJ Bradford’s 16 points and eight rebounds.

LOWELL CATHOLIC 64, KIPP 55 >> The Crusaders pulled out an impressive victory over KIPP. Lowell Catholic improved to 8-9, 8-3 league.

PELHAM 75, WEST 47 >> The Pythons easily defeated the Manchester school as Zach James notched 20 more points and five 3-pointers.

Dom Herrling was next in the scoring line with 18 points. Jake Travis also reached double figures with 12 points. Logan Dumont ripped down 10 rebounds for Pelham (14-3, 13-1 league).

BC HIGH 78, CHELMSFORD 60 >> Playing a traditiona­lly strong non-league opponent, the Lions put up a strong battle before falling.

CRUSADERS IN CLARK >> Groton-dunstable will play in the Clark High School Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Crusaders, the No. 8 seed, will try and upset top-seeded Shepherd Hill at 6:45 p.m. in a Large School quarterfin­al round game.

Tewksbury senior forward Luke Montejo took to social media to announce he’s taking his talents to New England College in Henniker, N.H.

NEC has struggled to a 4-18 record this winter. This year’s team features two local players: sophomore guard Jordan Phillip Lang of Dracut and freshman center Aiden Macleod of Shawsheen Tech and Wilmington.

Girls basketball

GR. LOWELL 54, WHITTIER 35 >> Greater Lowell Tech raced out to a 13-4 lead in the opening quarter and led 28-19 at halftime en route to the CAC win.

Mariah Lorenzo led the scoring parade with 18 points and sank four 3-pointers for the Gryphons

(6-10, 4-6 CAC Large). Meghan Lesniak drained two 3’s and scored 10 points. Also starring were Kat Muangvong (7 points), Laporsha Moses (6 points) and Kendra O’brien (4 points). TEWKSBURY 48, METHUEN 42 >> The Redmen trailed 27-25 at halftime and 3835 after three quarters before rallying for the Merrimack Valley Conference win.

Junior guard Emily Picher played a huge role in the victory, tossing in 25 points.

College basketball

DUCHARME SHINES >> Graduate guard Adriana Timberlake scored 30 points, including a driving lay-up with 2.1 seconds left, as Southern New Hampshire rallied past Bentley University, the eighthrank­ed team in Division II, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball action.

Junior forward Kylie Ducharme (Wilmington/wilmington HS) starred for Bentley with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double, and also had four steals.
