Brooks powers men’s basketball team to wild 104-95 victory

LOWELL >> Senior Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) tallied 29 points to lead the way for the Umass Lowell men’s basketball team in a fast-paced 104-95 victory over Ualbany on Saturday afternoon at Costello Athletic Center.

Although the River Hawks (19-7, 10-3 AE) led by as many as 18 early in the second half, the Great Danes’ Sebastian Thomas, who totaled 42 points, led a late 9-3 burst to cut the difference to just six, at 9589, with two minutes left. However, the River Hawks finished with solid defense, while seniors Yuri Covington (Wilkes-barre, Pa.) and Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C.) closed it out at the foul line.

For the second game in a row, three River Hawks scored 20 points, as senior Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in with 24 points with a 13for-16 effort at the foul line, along with 12 rebounds, and Hikim (Washington, D.C.) totaled 23 points with five assists.

Women’s basketball

ALBANY, N.Y. — Umass Lowell dropped the second game of a road trip 59-39 to the Ualbany Great Danes.

Freshman Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the team (4-22, 4-10 AE) with 14 points on 5-for11 shooting. The rookie added three assists, two rebounds and one steal. Graduate student Mili Carrera (Lima, Peru) scored six points and added three assists.

Women’s lacrosse

HAMDEN, Conn. — Freshman Chloe Bowers (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) scored a game-high five goals to help mount a fourth-quarter comeback as Umass Lowell took down the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 11-9.

The River Hawks (5-0) continue their best start in program history and remain tied for the best record in the nation.

“It was a good defensive game, and Alexa Kuhn played lights out,” said head coach Lisa Miller. “We managed to even out the draw control and scored and competed when we needed to. We’ll have to play a better team offense going forward.”

Bowers added two assists for a career-high seven points, and was one of six goal-scorers for the River Hawks. Senior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) finished with two goals and a caused turnover. Junior Megan Milkowich (Watertown, N.Y.), sophomores Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) and Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), and freshman Jillian Goldie (Owen

Baseball

WILLIAMSBU­RG, Va. — Umass Lowell fell 11-1 to the William & Mary Tribe in the first game of the weekend series Friday. The teams played against Saturday afternoon.

Juniors Brandon Fish (Londonderr­y, N.H.) and Alex Luccini (Hopedale) had the hits for the River Hawks (3-2). Senior Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) drew one walk and had four assists in the field.
