DeLoss “John” Smith, 92, re­tired U.S. Navy, passed away on Novem­ber 8, 2018. He sur­vived his wife, Pat Fan­ning Smith of West Vir­ginia. Sur­viv­ing rel­a­tives in­clude his nieces Denise Hol­man and Deanna Pey­ton, and neph­ews, Den­nis Smith and Kevin Klotz as well as many other nieces and neph­ews. He also leaves be­hind many good friends.

He was a dec­o­rated WWII Navy vet­eran, a boatswains mate on the LST 959 in the Pa­cific the­ater, pro­tect­ing our coun­try in the bat­tles of Iwo Jima and Ok­i­nawa. He later served with the Corps of Engi­neers in the CIA.

He was an hon­orary Ma­son for over 60 years, earn­ing the 32nd. de­gree. He was a mem­ber of the ma­sons in the Mur­rells In­let lodge and his home­town lodge in Galena, Illi­nois.

He will be in­terred in his home­town of Galena with his fam­ily.
