UConn: Con­necti­cut will re­tire the num­bers of for­mer stars Ray Allen and Re­becca Lobo. The num­bers 34 and 50 will be­come the first re­tired by the school dur­ing a cer­e­mony in March, an honor the univer­sity says that’s re­served for Hall of Famers. Wi­chita State: The NCAA de­nied an ap­peal by sopho­more guard Teddy Allen to play im­me­di­ately af­ter trans­fer­ring from West Vir­ginia, forc­ing him to sit out a red­shirt sea­son. Allen ap­pealed to the sub­com­mit­tee for leg­isla­tive re­lief ar­gu­ing that the trans­fer was so that he could be closer to his sup­port sys­tem in Boys Town, Ne­braska. The small vil­lage near Omaha pro­vides care, treat­ment and ed­u­ca­tion to at-risk chil­dren with be­hav­ioral, emo­tional and aca­demic is­sues. Allen ar­rived at Boys Town when he was 17 and blos­somed into a star bas­ket­ball player.

St. John’s: The men’s team will honor the late Hall of Fame bas­ket­ball writer Jim O'Connell of The As­so­ci­ated Press with a patch on game uni­forms Sun­day at Madi­son Square Gar­den. O'Connell, an alum­nus, was a fix­ture cover­ing sports at the Gar­den. He died in July at 64.
