UConn: Connecticut will retire the numbers of former stars Ray Allen and Rebecca Lobo. The numbers 34 and 50 will become the first retired by the school during a ceremony in March, an honor the university says that’s reserved for Hall of Famers. Wichita State: The NCAA denied an appeal by sophomore guard Teddy Allen to play immediately after transferring from West Virginia, forcing him to sit out a redshirt season. Allen appealed to the subcommittee for legislative relief arguing that the transfer was so that he could be closer to his support system in Boys Town, Nebraska. The small village near Omaha provides care, treatment and education to at-risk children with behavioral, emotional and academic issues. Allen arrived at Boys Town when he was 17 and blossomed into a star basketball player.
St. John’s: The men’s team will honor the late Hall of Fame basketball writer Jim O'Connell of The Associated Press with a patch on game uniforms Sunday at Madison Square Garden. O'Connell, an alumnus, was a fixture covering sports at the Garden. He died in July at 64.
