GAME RECAP: CUBS 7, DODGERS 0

THE GAME: Pitching prospects Josiah Gray and Edwin Uceta were roughed up for five runs in the third inning as the Chicago Cubs handed the Dodgers their first loss of the spring,

7-0, in a game cut to seven innings on Thursday night at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT:

Right-hander Jimmy Nelson gave up an unearned run in his first inning of the spring. It was Nelson’s first game action since back surgery a year ago. Due to a series of injuries (shoulder, elbow, back), Nelson has pitched just 22 innings at the big-league level since 2017 . ... Gray worked around an error in his first inning but gave up a leadoff home run and a walk to start his next inning and was pulled . ... Uceta replaced Gray and gave up four hits to the next five batters including a tworun home run by Austin Romine. Uceta retired the first two batters in the fourth but then gave up a solo home run to Ian Happ and two more hits before the inning was rolled over. ... Blake Treinen and Victor Gonzalez each pitched 1-23 innings, striking out two apiece . ... Ryan Pepiot also struck out two but walked one in his inning.

HITTING REPORT: The Dodgers had six hits, all singles, by six different batters – Corey Seager,

Edwin Rios, Zach McKinstry, Sheldon Neuse, A.J. Pollock and D.J. Peters.

DEFENSE REPORT: The Dodgers made two errors in the first two innings. A throwing error by catcher Austin Barnes on a steal attempt in the first inning allowed the Cubs’ first run to score. Playing third base, Neuse made a throwing error on a routine grounder to start the second inning but Gray worked around it.
