GAME RECAP: DIAMONDBACKS 9, ANGELS 2
THE GAME: The Angels allowed at least one run in the first six innings in a 9-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz.
PITCHING REPORT:
Right-hander Griffin Canning struck out five in two innings, whiffing Eduardo Escobar on a curveball and Steven Vogt on a fastball. He also got all three hitters to take curves for called third strikes in the second inning. “They’re not seeing it very well,” Canning said. “That’s encouraging. I used to get a lot more strikeouts looking in college, but it’s encouraging for sure.” In between the strikeouts, Canning gave up a pair of runs, including a 449-foot homer to Trayce Thompson. ... Right-hander Felix Peña gave up a pair of solo homers and two other hits in his first inning of work this spring . ... Right-hander Ty Buttrey gave up a run in one inning.
HITTING REPORT: The only player in the lineup who is expected to get regular playing time this season was first baseman Jared Walsh . ... Brandon Marsh yanked a triple into the gap in right-center field. Marsh “cramped up” while running the bases, manager Joe Maddon said, but he did not come out of the game. Immediately after the game, Maddon had no further details from trainers about Marsh’s condition. Marsh stayed in the game after the triple and scored on a passed ball. Marsh, who was the DH, did not hit again. He has been limited to DH duty because of a minor arm issue . ... Juan Lagares had two hits, including one to drive in a run. Lagares is 4 for 5 with a walk so far this spring. He and Jon Jay are likely competing for the fourth outfield spot on the Opening Day roster . ... Franklin Barreto had an RBI single. Barreto, who is in the running for the backup middle infield job, is 2 for 4 this spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Jo Adell bobbled a base hit he was trying to field, allowing the hitter to take second base . ... First baseman Walsh made a lunging grab of a sharp onehopper going to his right.
