GAME RECAP: ANGELS 17, INDIANS 8

THE GAME: Shohei Ohtani hit his second monster home run of the spring as part of the Angels’ nine-run outburst against reigning American League Cy Young winner Shane Bieber in their 17-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians in a Cactus League game on Tuesday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Griffin Canning gave up two runs in four innings, striking out five and walking one. Canning said he’s been working on his cutter down and away to right-handers, which “I did really well my first year so I’ve been trying to get that back on track.” Canning also said his elbow, which caused him to miss time last spring, is no longer a problem. “This is the best my elbow has felt in a while, especially bouncing back the day after,” he said. “It hasn’t been an issue so far. Hopefully, I can keep that up.” ... Right-hander Jesse Chavez gave up six runs and did not record an out. He gave up a three-run homer to Yu Chang.

HITTING REPORT: The Angels had seven hits in three innings against Bieber, a Laguna Hills High product . ... Ohtani hit his second homer over the batters’ eye this spring, a two-run shot against Bieber in the third inning. According to the Angels’ Trackman data, the ball traveled 464 feet. Ohtani’s previous homer over the batters’ eye was measured at 468 feet. Ohtani also had a single off Bieber’s foot. He is 11 for 19 with four homers this spring, including two on Monday . ... Albert Pujols singled and doubled, and is 10 for 23 this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Pujols lunged to his right to snag a sharp grounder at first base . ... Shortstop Jose Iglesias made a leaping catch of a line drive.
