GAME RECAP: DODGERS 5, CUBS 2

THE GAME: Will Smith drove in three runs with a pair of singles as the Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 at Sloan Park in Mesa on Thursday night.

PITCHING REPORT: RHP Dustin May walked a batter and hit another. But he didn’t give up a base hit until the fifth inning (backto-back singles by David Bote and Matt Duffy). May hit 101 mph on the stadium radar gun at one point in the fourth when the Cubs scored their first run on a walk, wild pitch and two ground balls. He struck out Javier Baez on a 100-mph fastball to end the inning. May struck out six in his five innings and called it his best outing of the spring . ... RHP Kenley Jansen faced three batters in the sixth, struck

out the first two (Willson Contreras and Kris Bryant) then gave up a single to Jason Heyward. RHP Corey Knebel replaced him and struck out Javier Baez, freezing him with a 97-mph called third strike.

HITTING REPORT: Cubs RHP Adbert Alzolay retired the first 11 Dodgers batters in order (five on strikeouts) before Justin Turner drew a two-out walk in the fourth inning. Cody Bellinger followed with the Dodgers’ first hit of the night, a double just inside the right-field line. Will Smith followed with a two-run single off Cubs lefty Brendon Little . ... In the sixth, Smith dropped a bloop single in front of Cubs right fielder Jason Heyward to drive in another run. Smith is 12 for 36 (.333) this spring . ... Beatyy hit a solo home run in the ninth inning, his first homer of the spring . ... Bellinger was 1 for 3 and is 3 for 18 (.167) in his six Cactus League games.

DEFENSE REPORT: Corey Seager made a throwing error on a fairly routine play after fielding a ground ball by Kris Bryant in the fourth inning . ... Elliott Soto made it two errors from the shortstop spot when he bobbled a potential double-play grounder in the seventh. Soto did start a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
