GAME RECAP: A’S 11, DODGERS 0

- — Bill Plunkett

THE GAME:

Clayton Kershaw’s final tuneup before Opening Day was ugly. He allowed nine runs in 3-1⁄3 innings as the Oakland A’s beat up on the Dodgers, 110, in an eight-inning game on Friday night at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT:

Kershaw was scheduled to pitch five innings and maybe into a sixth in his final preseason start. But he was charged with nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits (including three doubles and a triple) and two walks in just 3-1⁄3 innings. An error by shortstop Corey Seager extended a long second inning. But Kershaw gave up hard contact throughout the outing. Over his last two Cactus League starts (he pitched in a “B” game in between), Kershaw gave up 14 runs on 17 hits and three walks in just

7-1⁄3 innings . ... Left-hander Victor Gonzalez replaced Kershaw with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth inning. He walked in two runs before he could close out the inning . ... Right-hander Corey Knebel faced two batters in the fifth inning and had to leave the game after the second lined a ball back at him. The drive appeared to catch Knebel on the left arm or wrist, knocking his glove off. Knebel did pick up the ball and throw him out at first base . ... Right-hander Bobby Miller (the Dodgers’ first-round draft pick last year) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out three.

HITTING REPORT:

The Dodgers were held without a hit by Cole Irvin until a ground ball single by Gavin Lux leading off the sixth inning. The Dodgers’ only other baserunner in the first seven innings was Mookie Betts on a first-inning walk. He was immediately doubled off first base on a liner back to the mound.

... James Outman’s bloop double with two outs in the eighth was their only other hit in the game . ... Cody Bellinger was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. He is 3 for 21 (.143) in seven games this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT:

Miller made the play of the night, bouncing off the mound to grab a dribbler on the grass near the third-base line, setting himself and just beating Pete Kozma with a strong throw to first.
