Inland’s virus cases stay flat

Little fluctuation also is reported in hospitalizations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties

Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations remained flat in Inland counties this week, meaning there were few fluctuations in the number of cases and hospitalizations.

Cases fell slightly this week in San Bernardino County, county and state data released Monday shows.

The county reported 2,554 new cases in the past week — an 11% drop from the week before — and 38 deaths. State data shows 308 people hospitalized with the virus and 96 patients in intensive care units.

San Bernardino County also reported giving 14% fewer vaccine doses this week than the week before, but booster shots and children ages 5-11 getting vaccinated continue to keep county vaccination numbers higher than they were last month.

In Riverside County, cases and hospitalizations remained more or less the same over the past week — mirroring a similar trend from the past few weeks, Monday’s county and the state data shows.

According to county numbers, 2,165 cases were reported the past week. State data shows 233 patients hospitalized with the virus and 57 in intensive care units.

The county reported 86 deaths this past week. The higher number of deaths may be attributed to clearing backlogs and the “result of the variant increase we had months ago,” said Jose Arballo Jr., spokesperson for Riverside County’s public health department.

While the overall number of vaccination doses fell this week by 5% compared with the week before, booster shots and children 5-11 getting vaccinated continue to keep county numbers higher than they were last month.

In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, case rates have plateaued at a high enough level that the counties have been in the Centers for Disease Con

trol and Prevention’s two highest risk tiers — high or substantial — all month.

Over the weekend, Los Angeles County surpassed the grim milestone of 27,000 COVID-19 deaths, county officials said. County data released Monday showed slightly more cases — 1% — this week compared with last week. Also, there were 12% fewer patients hospitalized with the virus than last week.

Here are the latest numbers. Vaccination and hospitalization data comes from the state and is as of Sunday. Other numbers were reported by the county Monday.
