Pomona-Pitzer wins Division III national title

The Pomona-Pitzer men’s cross country program won its second consecutiv­e NCAA Division III national championsh­ip.

Pomona-Pitzer finished with 80 points at the championsh­ips held at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The Sagehens held off a challenge from MIT (112 points) to defend the national championsh­ip it claimed in 2019.

Colin Kirkpatric­k led the way for Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday morning, completing the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24 minutes, 1.8 seconds to place 10th. Derek Feason was 12th (24:02.5) and Lucas Florsheim was 14th (24:04.9).

coach Kyle Flores said in a new release. “The guys went out and executed the game plan to perfection. We knew that if we went out and ran our race, that the result we wanted would come... This day was a dream come true.”

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps placed sixth in the team standings with 225 points. Henry Pick led the way for the Stags, finishing third with a time of 23:40.4.

The Claremont-MuddScripp­s women’s team placed second with 132 points, two behind national champ Johns Hopkins. The Athenas were led by Meredith Bloss (13th, 21:17.4 on 6K course), Natalie Bitetti (16th, 21:24.5) and Riley Harmon (19th, 21:32.9).

Pomona-Pitzer finished 10th in the women’s standings, with Genevieve Dibari placing 25th (21:37.5) in the individual standings.

Coyotes reign again at CCAA tournament

Alexis Cardoza registered a match-high 19 kills as the Cal State San Bernardino women’s volleyball team outlasted Cal Poly Pomona 2517, 13-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-10, Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino to claim the program’s fifth consecutiv­e California Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n tournament championsh­ip.

Cal State San Bernardino has won 22 straight matches and is the No. 2 team in the NCAA Division II national rankings.

Cardoza had a kill and an ace to give the Coyotes (25-3) an early lead in the fifth set. Cardoza finished the set with four kills, and Asia Clarke added three more kills. Leilia To’omalatai ended the match with her second ace.

Jalyn Hayes finished the match with 12 kills and a .444 attacking percentage. Marlee Nunley recorded 43 assists, 10 digs and four aces, while Makena Overbey led the Coyotes with 21 digs.

Daisy Duke led Cal Poly Pomona (23-4) with 16 kills, and Jazmyn Wheeler had 12 kills and 11 digs for the Broncos. Kira Zimmerman recorded a match-high 49 assists, and Brynn Sherbert led all players with 25 digs.

RCC football looks to defend state title

The California Community College Athletic Associatio­n has announced its football playoff schedule and bowl games.

Riverside City College will have a chance to defend the state championsh­ip it won in 2019. The Tigers (8-2) are the No. 4 seed in the Southern California Regional playoffs and will travel to top-seeded Ventura (10-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m. This is the first meeting for these programs since 2019, when Ventura beat RCC in the regional final.

Golden West (10-0) will host College of the Canyon (8-2) in the other regional semifinal game Saturday at noon.

City College of San Francisco, College of San Mateo, Fresno City and American River are the teams who will be competing in the Northern California Regional playoffs.

The CCCAA also announced the 22 teams that will be competing in bowl games.

Mt. San Jacinto College (8-2) will host Antelope Valley College (8-2) in the American Championsh­ip Bowl on Saturday at 1 p.m. MSJC defeated Antelope Valley 23-13 earlier this season.
